Cory Mathews speaks to Supplement Judge

For this interview, Supplement Judge is very lucky and privileged to speak to Ronnie Coleman Signature Series‘s sponsored athlete Cory Mathews. In this interview we see what it takes to become a top class bodybuilder!

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am 37 years old born in Las Vegas Nevada. I am married with 4 children and a Minister.

How long have you been training for?

I’ve been training for 23 years.

How did you get started in training?

In my youth, lifting weights was a recreational pastime. I always wanted muscles, so I knew if I lifted weights I would be strong and have big muscles. Once I started I realized it was something I was good at. It became a lifetime hobby for me.

Who got you motivated to start training?

I was always motivated by the Incredible Hulk, He-man and Conan the Barbarian. I wanted muscles like them. When it came to training for shows and bodybuilding, Ronnie Coleman gave me great motivation.

What are your short and long term fitness goals?

My short term fitness goals are to enhance my physique.

My long time fitness goals are to stay healthy and injury free.

What workout routine has worked best for you?

No particular routine, but a style of giant sets and high-volume with heavy weights.

Could you outline your basic daily diet?

For breakfast I have 8 egg whites and 1 cup of grits. My second meal is chicken and rice, third meal is lean ground beef and sweet potato. 4th meal is chicken, 5th meal is lean ground beef. My 6th meal is Tilapia.

Do you use supplements? If so, what do you recommend?

Yes, I use all the Ronnie Coleman Signature Series supplements. Depending on my goal I love to use Pro Antium as a post workout and Amino Tone during work out, so that I can maximize my recovery and grow.

Do you have post/pre-workout meals? What’s your favorite?

Generally I eat between my second and third meal. So, before I work out I eat chicken and rice and afterwards I eat lean ground beef and sweet potato.

How do you deal with things such as hunger and cravings?

Chew lots of gum. 🙂

Do you have any cheat meals?

When I’m not in contest prep, I devote a whole weekend to enjoying myself with family and eating cheat meals.

What is your biggest motivation to get you back in the gym?

I’m motivated when I think about all the people who are in the gym when I’m not. So it pushes me to get back in there and train harder.

If you could go back in time, what would you change in your training?

I probably wouldn’t have changed much. Probably would have done more isolation movements at a younger age.

Any advice for beginners or anyone looking to get back into fitness?

My advice is not to give up. Once you set a goal continue to pursue it until it’s accomplished.

What advice do you to anyone looking to lose weight in time for summer?

My advice would be to make good eating habits right now. And make health and fitness a lifestyle.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Just want to thank you for the opportunity. And a big shout out to Mr. 8x himself, a person who is more than just a mentor but someone I call friend.
